Itacare Real Estate - A Brief Background

Itacare is one of the top tourist destinations along the southern Bahia coast. It became popular among surfers in in the 1980’s and 90’s among surfers and a generation of those looking for an alternative lifestyle, including nature lovers, “hippies”, rastas and others. Back then Itacare was much harder to get to, since the road from Ilheus to Itacare was only paved in 1998.

The same vibe continues today, with tourists and residents mingling at night in a music filled, peace-loving party atmosphere concentrated in the center of Itacare. The main street, Rua Pedro Longo, is often comparted to Rua das Pedras in Buzios because of its lively night life.

Real estate investment in Itacare has historically been focused around the town center, and most of the coastline and beach properties surrounding Itacare center were large areas of land owned by just a few families for generations. The most recent generation of landowners, however, have sold large areas of land to large developers or land investors who further subdivided large properties into lots for single home construction.
